Introducing the IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Edition “Cancellara”

Share

Just to name a few, his credentials stand at: Two-time Olympic and four-time world champion in the individual time trial, three-time winner of the classic Paris–Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, winner of the Tirreno Adriatico and the Tour de Suisse. And while he has stopped chasing further titles since the end of the 2016 season, Fabian Cancellara — better known to you and I as, Spartacus — remains, an exemplary gracious, champion.

If you are, however, unfamiliar with the Swiss cyclist, have a read of this interview, where Wei Koh caught up with Cancellara just ahead of his retirement. Everything you need to know get up to speed about Fabian Cancellara, is all there.

Recently, with the help of brand partner IWC, Cancellara announced that he was going to get back on his cycle as part of an event he’s calling Chasing Cancellara. While he will be riding at the event, he won’t necessarily be racing. Rather the purpose behind the event is to allow some 333 qualifying fans of the cyclist to come ride alongside the champ in an attempt to try and overtake him.

Surely the champ will be cruisn’, while everyone else chases him. But what happens if someone does overtake Cancellara? Well, that lucky cyclist will then be awarded with a Fabian-Cancellara-Conqueror-Certificate.

It’s really nothing official. Just a fun way for Cancellara to stay rooted to the sport and community that is close to his heart. If you happen to be in Switzerland and wish to join in, check out chasingcancellara.com for race dates, locations and other details.

If, however, you aren’t in Switzerland but still wish to partake in the champ’s legacy, you could consider getting your hands on a limited edition watch that IWC has unveiled to honor Cancellara, who has been an ambassador with the Schaffhausen based watchmaker since 2010.

The watch is called the Ingenieur Chronograph Edition “Cancellara” (Ref. IW380704) and sports the refreshed look of the Ingenieur announced earlier this year. IWC revealed the watch at a special riding event that the brand held on the 28th of June 2017.

For the ride — called the Spartacus Ride — Canellara took with him 25 amateur cyclists on a 77km route from his how town of Bern to Moosegg and through the Emmental back to Bern. The route is said to be 77 km of Cancellara’s favorite roads.

Trouble is, that number, 77 is also tied to number of Ingenieur Chronograph Edition “Cancellara” that IWC will be producing. Meaning to say, if you wish to own this piece of Spartacus’s legacy, you best be calling you nearest IWC retailer right about now.
