Introducing Le Rhöne’s Moön Black Cosmic

The Low-Down

There is nothing more beautiful than a clear view of the star-filled sky while the moon holds sway and the night sings with an altogether different set of voices — unless it’s seeing that view memorialized in a remarkable piece of jewelry. The Le Rhöne Moön Black Cosmic is a delightful take on a moon phase complication: playful, elegant and a unique conversation piece.

The uncompromising centerpiece of the watch is the oversized moon phase indicator that crosses the starry black sky of the dial. Le Rhöne 3D laser engraves a 9.9 mm brushed metal disc with a detailed, realistic depiction of the full moon and it floats around the backdrop behind a plate that obscures the moon into its proper phase shape. It’s a mastery of design that cannot fail to invite comment and admiration.

The dial is black sapphire, creating a perfect backdrop for the sprinkling of stars. It’s a lovely piece in the light, but the true magic happens when the lights go low. Each star is etched into the sapphire and filled with Super-LumiNova to give the viewer a field of glowing stars in the dark. The hour and minute hands are also coated with the lume for superior readability against the dial, which is numberless in order to keep the spotlight on the waxing and waning moon.

IMHO

The 41mm case has a tonneau shape and the flutes have been sculpted from flank to lugs to lend a sense of modernity to the timepiece. The simple dot and dash indexes on the outer dial maintain a clean, minimal landscape for the moon phase complication. The case comes in 316L stainless steel for a more traditional feel or in pink gold for a striking bolder statement.

The crown is used to correct the moon phase mechanism, and the absence of a separate corrector maintains the simple, clean lines of the case. It’s just one of the many decisions Le Rhöne made to keep all attention on the moon phase complication, to great effect.

The movement is based on a Soprod M100 and includes their proprietary moon phase module. From the transparent case-back, the propeller-shaped rotor is visible as it winds the movement in both directions.

The Moön Black Cosmic is sold with a tasteful alligator strap in a black that pairs well with the black sapphire dial. With Le Rhöne’s usual attention to detail, the folding buckle even takes the shape of their logo for a subtle final touch.
For a smaller, more dressed-up option, there is a 37mm size featuring a choice of a 60-diamond studded bezel or a stunning diamond snowflake setting.
