Introducing Omega’s Seamaster Diver 300M America’s Cup Chronograph

The America’s Cup

The America’s Cup for excellence in yachting was first awarded in 1851 and so is the oldest trophy of any international sport. This year marks the 36th America’s Cup contest and it will be hosted in Auckland, New Zealand, from March 6th to 21st. Omega has been invited for the third time to serve as official timekeeper for the event and they’ve released a new Seamaster model to commemorate the partnership based on the 2019 chronograph Seamaster Diver 300M. The new Seamaster Diver 300M America’s Cup Chronograph brings some interesting updates and a bold new look.

A Nautical Chronograph

Omega has kept some familiar elements from the previous model, but there are many technical and visual updates to explore. The 44mm case is stainless steel, and has a screw-down crown, helium escape valve and twin sapphire crystals to deliver a water resistance of 300 meters. Omega retained the blue ceramic bezel marked with a white enamel scale from the previous model, and the blue ceramic dial with engraved waves on the dial. This time, however, Omega brought a stronger sense of the America’s Cup race livery of red, white and blue by adding bold accents of red. They began with the red chronograph minute hand, which is a striking red anodized aluminum with a counterweight shaped like the America’s Cup trophy. At 3 o’clock, a minute and hour sub counter is ringed in red anodized aluminum and introduces a regatta countdown indicator specific function to the chronograph. The Seamaster model name is lettered in red and they added a red and blue colorway to the now rubber-coated pushers. The overall look of the dial is bold and carries a strong nautical sense of style.

Improved Functionality

Functionally, there are some notable changes from the previous model. While the date window at 6 o’clock is unchanged, they added an internal hour disc in lieu of an hour hand to improve the overall legibility. There is also a new chronograph lock system in the form of a sliding button at 8 o’clock to help protect stopwatch functions during the hectic moments of race sailing.

A sliding button at 8 o’clock allows the wearer to lock the chronograph pushers in place, preventing accidental activation during hectic sailing.

Turning the watch over, there are special edition engravings proclaiming the 36th America’s Cup and Auckland 2021. The rear sapphire also gives a fabulous view of the in-house Calibre 9900 automatic chronograph with Arabesque stripes. The 9900 delivers a 60-hour power reserve and the movement is engineered for shock absorption in mind. The final innovation comes in the form of Omega’s patented quick change system, which allows the wearer to switch between the included stainless steel bracelet and blue rubber strap with a simple press of a button. This tool-less strap change means only moments between the sporty rubber strap while expertly sailing the yacht to elegant stainless steel for accepting the winner’s prize.
